BASE – Battery Passport for Resilient Supply Chain and Implementation of Circular Economy

EU-Project / Project start /

Batteries are essential for storing renewable energy and for electric mobility. However, Europe is dependent on imports of rare raw materials for battery production. It is therefore important to prioritize material reusability and take into account the entire life cycle of a battery. The European Commission's planned digital battery passport will offer a comprehensive overview of key information.

The BASE project aims to develop the digital battery passport. Led by the Fraunhofer Research Institution for Energy Infrastructure and Geothermal Systems IEG, a multinational project consortium is driving this initiative. The passport will contain continuously collected data on the "State of Health" as well as information on the supply chain, the manufacturing process and material data. It will apply the "mass balance" method, which offers a detailed accounting of the materials used in battery production, with special emphasis on the use of sustainable components. The data from the battery passport is stored in a decentralized and tamper-proof manner so that all parties involved have access to it. This enables the optimization of battery lifespan and enhances recycling.

Fraunhofer SCAI contributes its experience in ontologies and data management. The Multiphysics business unit is developing a taxonomy of attributes to be collected across the entire value chain. Building on this, the Virtual Material Design team will provide its experience in data collection and evaluation for batteries, enabling the development of a digital twin of a battery.

The BASE project is funded by the European Commission under the Horizon Europe program (Grant Agreement No: 101157200). Fraunhofer SCAI's share of the funding is about 400 thousand euros.
